Scope and Content Pitlochry Station, Perthshire This station was opened in 1863 by the Inverness & Perth Junction Railway, but was rebuilt c1890 by The Highland Railway to cope with increasing tourist traffic. This view shows a collection of buildings at the north end of the station. In the background is the signalbox, with a small level crossing. On either side of the gate are coal merchants' offices, and on the right is a weighbridge with its office. Pitlochry became an inland resort as a result of the coming of the railway, and is still an important holiday destination. The many hotels and boarding houses generated a considerable demand for coal supplied by rail. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
