Scope and Content Paisley Gas Works, Paisley, Renfrewshire Paisley Gas Works was founded to make town gas by carrbonising coal, and continued to do so until the early 1960s. The vertical retort installation then in operation was dismantled, but the works retained its holders. This view shows the house that was probably built for the manager of the 1827 works, with the gas holders to the right. In the west of Scotland coal gas was replaced by gas made from petroleum as an interim measure before natural gas was made available. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
