Scope and Content Glasgow Underground workshops, Broomloan Road, Glasgow The Glasgow Underground railway was opened as the Glasgow District Subway in 1896. It was originally cable worked, but was electrified in 1934 by Glasgow Corporation. These workshops dated from the opening of the line. This view shows the battery-electric locomotive used underground for works trains when the traction current was cut off. The system was completely modernised in the mid 1970s. This locomotive is now in the Glasgow Transport Museum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
