Scope and Content Duty free warehouse No 4 from north-west, Talisker Distillery, Skye, Highland Talisker Distillery, the only single malt distillery on Skye, was established in 1830 by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill. It was renovated 1880-7, and expanded in 1900. Triple distillation was abandoned in 1928 in favour of double distillation, in common with most other Scottish distilleries. After a fire in 1960 most buildings were replaced, but he distillery's maltings were demolished in 1972. This shows one of the distillery's four warehouses. It is constructed from whitewashed rubble and has a corrugated metal roof. The name of the distillery has been painted along the side of the building to advertise the works to people passing by on the road. This warehouse is used to store casks of whisky whilst they mature for at least three years. The stone building has small windows, ventilators and an earthen floor to create the perfect atmosphere for spirit to take on additional flavour and colour from the oak casks.
