Scope and Content Biggar Gas Works, Biggar, Lanarkshire Biggar Gas Works was one of many small gas works in Scotland making gas by dry distillation of coal. It was one of the last of its kind to operate in central Scotland. This is a general view of the works after it had closed and the retort-house chimney had been demolished. The larger of the two gas holders can be seen, with the retort house beyond. This works has been preserved and is now in the care of Historic Scotland. It is open during the summer months in association with the National Museums of Scotland and the Biggar Museum Trust. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
