Description Catcraig, Limekilns View from WNW

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 433784

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Catcraig Limekilns, Dunbar, East Lothian These large commercial kilns are typical of the Lothian lime industry, which supplied lime both for building and for agricultural purposes. There are two kilns in the block, one with two draw arches and the other with three. This view shows the kilns from the west. The two-draw kiln is at the right end of the block. The kilns were loaded with limestone and coal from the bank on the right, and the burnt lime taken out through the arches. These kilns were restored by East Lothian County Council in 1966 with funding from the owners of the cement works being constructed nearby, This works uses the seam of limestone worked for the Catcraig kilns.
