Dunglass, New Bridge View of single arch

SC 433631

Description Dunglass, New Bridge View of single arch

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 433631

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content New Bridge, Dunglass, Berwickshire and East Lothian This is an unusual and fine example of a 'romantic' castellated bridge, built to carry the main road from Edinburgh to Berwick over the Dunglass Burn. This view shows the castellated parapets, and the rustic treatment of the arch ring. The railings are probably an addition. The 'romantic' treatment of this bridge indicates that its designer was influenced by the notions of the sublime that were part of the Romantic Movement throughout Europe.
