Pinkie, smithy View of smithy and neighbouring cottage from W

SC 433173

Description Pinkie, smithy View of smithy and neighbouring cottage from W

Date 12/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 433173

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Smithy, Crumstane, Berwickshire This block of three cottages resembles the rows of farm servants' cottages which are features of the cereal-growing areas of eastern Scotland. This one has a smithy at one end. In this view the smithy is on the left. In front of the building is a circular pad for fitting iron tyres to cart wheels. The architectural treatment of the cottages is unusually elaborate. This particular grouping is unusual, but the principal of attaching a smithy to a range of otherwise isolated cottages is not uncommon. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
