Eyemouth Harbour View of sluices

SC 432840

Description Eyemouth Harbour View of sluices

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 432840

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Sluices, Eyemouth Harbour, Eyemouth, Berwickshire This harbour at the mouth of the Eye Water was formed in 1768 by John Smeaton, and rebuilt subsequently, notably in 1885-7 by Thomas Meik & Son, after a fishing-boat disaster. This view shows sluices at the upper end of the harbour which can be opened at suitable tidal conditions to scour mud from the harbour basin. Eyemouth became, and remains, an important port for the fisheries of the North Sea. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
