Scope and Content Chirnside Bridge, Chirnside, Berwickshire this a typical Borders bridge, mainly of rubble construction, with ashlar dressings. It was built as part of the 18th century programme of road improvements that made Berwickshire one of Scotland's most advanced agricultural areas. This view shows the two main river spans, segmentally arched, with triangular cutwaters carried up to form pedestrian refuges. The third span was added in the mid 19th century to accommodate a railway track. Chirnside Paper Mill is in the background. The roadway on this bridge is inclined, an unusual feature.
