Scope and Content The Martello Tower, Leith Docks, Edinburgh Martello Towers were built during the Napoleonic Wars, at the start of the 19th century. They were designed to provide protection for shipping, in this case for the traffic entering Leith Harbour. The tower today stands on dry land far out towards the dock gates, but, as this 19th-century illustration shows, it originally stood on an offshore skerry. Land reclamation and silting have changed the face of offshore Leith dramatically. The design of the tower provided ground-floor accommodation for the gunners, and there were deep foundations providing space for stores and magazines. The gun emplacements were in the open on the top floor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
