Scope and Content Union Bridge, Hutton, Berwickshire This was the first large suspension bridge in Britain. It was designed by Captain Samuel Brown, and employed his patent design of wrought-iron chains. The bridge spans the river Tweed where it forms the boundary between Scotland and England. This view shows the bridge from the south end, looking into Scotland. The wire ropes above the triple chains were added in 1902-3 when the bridge was strengthened. The pylon at the south side end is, unusually, set back from the end of the span, as can be seen in this view. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
