Scope and Content Agricultural remains and the 'Innocent Railway', Prestonfield Golf Course, City of Edinburgh Careful management of the golf course at Prestonfield has fossilised the remains of early agriculture. The curving swathes of rig and furrow stand out particularly well in a low light, and are best seen from the air. The ridges were formed by the plough teams as they turned over the soil to grow crops such as oats and barley. Remains such as this are commonly destroyed by modern buildings and industry, but they are an important record of the past way of life. To the left may be seen the straight track of the 'Innocent Railway'. It was built in 1831 to carry coal from Dalkeith to the City. It was a horse-drawn line and included a stone tunnel, a cast iron bridge and a timber viaduct. Today it is a cycle path. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
