Scope and Content Defence and cultivation, Holyrood Park, City of Edinburgh There are four hillforts in Holyrood Park. The summit fort has not been excavated and there is no trace of internal structures, but it has been dated, by association with similar forts elsewhere, to the Early Historic Period, some 1,500 years ago. In contrast, the fort on Dunsapie Crag is smaller and probably earlier. Some excavation has taken place here, and waste material from metal-working was uncovered, as well as house sites and midden deposits incorporating domestic rubbish. Below the summit fort a series of fifteen cultivation terraces descend the hillside, and strips of rig and furrow ploughing may be seen below them. This fertile ground was in use into the 17th century but cultivation may well have begun much earlier. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
