Scope and Content Kincardine Bridge, Kincardine on Forth, Fife This bridge was built to accommodate increasing motor vehicle traffic in central Scotland. It was the first road bridge over the Forth to the east of Stirling, and had a 111m swing span, to allow masted vessels to proceed upriver. This view shows the bridge from the north west. The approach spans on both sides have slightly arched steel girders supported on concrete piers. The swing span is towards the right. The swing span here was the longest in Europe at the time of its construction. Since this photograph was taken the swing span has been immobilised, as ships no longer trade upriver.
