Scope and Content Letham Moss Works near Airth, Stirlingshire This works was one of a number which extracted peat from raised bogs in central Scotland, and converted it into a coarse powder known as moss litter, used in horticulture. Most of these works used light railways to move peat from the workings. This view shows one of the locomotives on the light railway at Letham on its way back to the works from the peat bog. This locomotive was made by Lister, of Dursley, Gloucestershire. Until the agricultural improvements of the late 18th and early 19th century much of the low land in the Forth valley was covered by a thick layer of peat. This works was exploiting one of the remnants of this peat cover. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
