Kilsyth, Garrel Mill View from NNE

SC 431374

Description Kilsyth, Garrel Mill View from NNE

Date 4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 431374

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Garrel Mill, near Kilsyth, Stirlingshire This was originally a water-powered grain mill, and probably dates substantially from 1774, which makes it an early survivor, as most water mills latterly existing were substantially rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries. This view shows the mill from the road side. The doorway on the left, roof glazing and chimney are not original, and were probably added when the mill was converted into a builder's workshop and store. The datestones are above the lower of the two arched cart entries, with the 1700 one clearly inserted, and the 1774 date on the keystone. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
