Castleloan Toll Bar View from S

SC 431045

Description Castleloan Toll Bar View from S

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 431045

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Castlelaw Tollbar, Greenlaw, Berwickshire This is a comparatively late and ornamental tollhouse. The building is in some respects typical of its type, with its projecting central entrance, and piended roof. The bay windows and the open pediment above the doorway are however unusual features. Houses like this were used for collecting payments for the use of a stretch of road. The right to collect tolls was usually auctioned, giving the turnpike trust an assured income, and encouraging the keeper to collect the tolls assiduously. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
