Scope and Content Victoria Steam Laundry, Hawick, Roxburghshire This laundry was one of many built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to wash and iron domestic linen using then newly-invented steam-powered machinery. This view shows the street frontage of the laundry, which is on a triangular site. This laundry is situated in a purely industrial suburb of Hawick, separated from the town centre by the river Teviot, This is an early example of an industrial estate.
