Scope and Content Part of Wilton Mills, Hawick, Roxburghshire The Wilton Mills of Dicksons and Laings was one of the largest and oldest of the Hawick textile mills. By the time this photograph was taken textile production had ceased, and the buildings were in multiple occupation. This view shows the western part of this very large complex, added in the later 19th century. The clock tower is a statement of the prestige of the owners. Wilton Mills was originally water-powered, and this block was probably built as a spinning mill producing yarn for the local framework knitting industry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
