Hawick, Commercial Road, Wilton Mills View along Commercial Road from E, showing main mill buildings and river

Description Hawick, Commercial Road, Wilton Mills View along Commercial Road from E, showing main mill buildings and river

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 430046

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Part of Wilton Mills, Hawick, Roxburghshire The Wilton Mills of Dicksons and Laings was one of the largest and oldest of the Hawick textile mills. By the time this photograph was taken textile production had ceased, and the buildings were in multiple occupation. This view shows most of this very large complex, with the oldest mill in the centre. There is another block behind the mill with the clock tower. The tail-race from the water power system is in the foreground. Wilton Mills was originally water-powered, and this block was probably built as a spinning mill producing yarn for the local framework knitting industry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
