Bonchester Bridge View from SW

SC 429622

Description Bonchester Bridge View from SW

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 429622

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Road bridge, Bonchester Bridge, Roxburghshire This is a good example of a turnpike bridge, originally of masonry construction, which has been widened and strengthened in concrete to cope with heavier traffic. This view shows the widened side of the bridge with the thin reinforced-concrete arch ring and the masonry skin applied to the face of the concrete spandrels. This photograph shows a sensitive approach to retaining the character of a bridge which had proved inadequate for modern motor traffic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
