Scope and Content Waulk mill, The Whinney, Bonjedward, Roxburghshire A waulk mill was a mill for finishing hand-woven woollen cloth. Wooden hammers powered by a waterwheel beat the cloth in water containing fullers earth to make a felted surface. This gave the cloth resistance to heat loss. This view shows the main range of the mill. The water wheel would have been in the wings projecting from the side of the building, but exactly where is not clear, for the machinery had long gone by the 1970s. Waulk mills were an early stage in the industrialisation of the textile industry, capitalist centralised units which tended to make the weavers dependent on the provider of this facility. Mills of this type were used until power looms became general. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
