Catalogue Number B 58

Scope and Content View of door in hall of Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. This passage was created on the first floor of the tower-house in 1911-12 out of part of the great hall. The walls are roughly plastered and to the left is a triangular-headed aumbry, or cupboard recess. The aumbry is a 20th-century addition, although there is one in the great hall dating to the 16th century. Lorimer's (1864-1929) sympathetic restoration copied the forms of architecture used for the original tower-house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
