Scope and Content Detail of original entrance to Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. The original doorway is at ground level in the south-east wall of the stair-turret of the tower. Its surround is decorated with carved ornament known as dog-tooth. Above the door is a secondary lintel inscribed in false relief. Above the secondary lintel is a small date panel bearing the date 1598. To the right and left, the rybats, (dressed stones at the edges of an opening) are carved. Further to the right is a sandstone panel, also carved in relief. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
