Scope and Content View of south range of Dunderave Castle from the south-east, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. Designed by Lorimer, the one-and-a-half-storeyed south range has crowstepped gables. The gable to the right is corbelled. There is an arched pend, or passage in the centre. The windows on the ground floor have roll-moulded surrounds. The upper windows to the left have pediments while the upper window on the gable has an arch above it, known as a relieving arch. Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929) extended the castle in a manner sympathetic to the original building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
