Scope and Content View of Dunderave Castle from the north-west, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. The lower buildings to the left and right of the tower were designed by Lorimer (1864-1929) to create a sheltered courtyard. He designed them to harmonise with the original building, using the same local rubble masonry. He restored the roof of the tower, using stone slabs, and made the gables crowstepped along with the gables of the lower ranges. He added extra dormer windows to the tower, but did not reinstate the harling on the tower. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
