Scope and Content View of Dunderave Castle from the south, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. In building the south range for his patron, Lorimer created a new approach to the castle. Visitors would come in through the arched pend, or passageway, at the far right, and enter the sheltered courtyard. To the left, is the late 16th-century tower built by John MacNaughton or his father, Sir Alexander. To the right is the south range designed by Lorimer (1864-1929) to harmonise with the tower. There is a similar range to the north of the tower. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
