Scope and Content Mertoun Bridge, Roxburghshire Mertoun Bridge was built to designs by James Slight engineer of Edinburgh. It is a very refined masonry bridge, with very flat arches. This view shows the bridge from the west, showing the all-ashlar sandstone construction, the flatness of the five arches and the slender piers with arched cutwaters. Note that the arch-stones - voussoirs - extend up to road level. This is one of the finest 19th century masonry bridges in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
