Scope and Content Tollhouse, Mertoun Bridge, Roxburghshire Mertoun Bridge was built to designs by James Slight engineer of Edinburgh. This tollhouse, to collect payments for the use of the bridges - pontages - is probably contemporary. This view shows the bay window of the house to give the tollkeeper a clear view of customers. As with many bridge tollhouses the accommodation in the house is on two levels. In this case there is an extension to the rear. Bridge tolls were abolished in the 1880s.
