Scope and Content Tollhouse, Coldstream Bridge, Coldstream, Berwickshire This bridge was designed by John Smeaton, and is one of his masterpieces. It has seven segmental arches, with triangular cutwaters, now protected from scouring by steel-piled concrete outworks. This view is of the tollhouse at the north end of the bridge. The original building is on the left.. Its relationship to the bridge has been altered by changes in road level and by traffic management measures. This bridge was one of the prime crossings of the Tweed, where it forms the boundary between Scotland and England, hence the considerable style in which it is built.
