Description Kelso, Station Road, Station, engine shed View from SW

Date 9/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 427592

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Former locomotive shed, Kelso Station, Kelso, Roxburghshire This station was opened in 1850 by the North British Railway as part of its line from St Boswells to Kelso. This shed was built to accommodate the locomotives which worked the branch line. This view shows the shed from the south west. The two arched doorways indicate that there were two tracks into the shed, and the short length suggests that it housed two locomotives. The roof-ridge ventilator carried off the smoke. The line to Kelso was intended as part of a major through route, hence Kelso was intended as a wayside station. It closed to passengers in 1964, and to goods in 1968.
