Scope and Content Melrose Station, Melrose, Roxburghshire Melrose Station was built by the Edinburgh & Hawick Railway, a subsidiary of the North British Railway. It was unusually large and elaborate, for it was designed for the substantial traffic of visitors to Melrose Abbey. This view shows the station buildings on the Edinburgh side from the northwest. The prominent and unusual platform awnings can be seen. The large goods shed on the right abuts the back of the awning. The urinal is in front of it. Melrose had been popularised by the writings of Sir Walter Scott, and attracted many visitors, especially when the railway made it much easier and cheaper to visit it. It was closed in 1968.
