Scope and Content Interior of cast-iron urinal, Melrose Station, Melrose, Roxburghshire Melrose Station was built by the Edinburgh & Hawick Railway, a subsidiary of the North British Railway. It was unusually large and elaborate, for it was designed for the substantial traffic of visitors to Melrose Abbey. This view shows the basic sanitary provision at the station, added some years after the opening. Melrose had been popularised by the writings of Sir Walter Scott, and attracted many visitors, especially when the railway made it much easier and cheaper to visit it. It was closed in 1968.
