Scope and Content View of wooden-framed, two-cylinder carding machine and piecing machine in Redhouses Woollen Mill, Bridgend, Islay, Argyll and Bute Redhouses lies 2km north-east of Bridgend, Islay, on the east bank of the River Sorn. There are the remains of a late 18th-/early 19th-century carding-mill, along with a woollen mill built in 1883. The woollen mill consists of an L-shaped, three-storeyed main block, with a single-storeyed wing to the south. The machinery is driven by water power, and some pieces were removed from the earlier mill to carry on the traditional processing methods. This is a two-cylinder carding and piecing machine, which produced continuous strands of yarn, on the ground floor of the mill. Like the other machines in the mill, this machine if belt-driven and linked by a system of overhead pulleys to the waterwheel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
