Description Finlaggan Castle, Islay. General view from West.

Catalogue Number SC 427385

Scope and Content View from west showing Finlaggan Castle, Islay, Argyll and Bute Loch Finlaggan lies c.1.5km north-west of Ballygrant on Islay. The remains of a castle and associated buildings occupy two small islands at the north-east end of the loch: Eilean Mór, meaning 'great isle'; and Eilean na Comhairle, meaning 'council isle'. This is a view of Eilean Mór from the west. Most of the late medieval buildings on the two islands are reduced to the lowest courses of their walls, but there are two relatively well-preserved structures on Eilean Mór, as seen here. The structure on the left was a chapel, while the structure to the right seems to have been a service range for the castle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
