Description Finlaggan Castle, Islay. View of building C (provisional).

Catalogue Number SC 427383

Scope and Content View of a ruined building at Finlaggan Castle, Islay, Argyll and Bute Loch Finlaggan lies c.1.5km north-west of Ballygrant on Islay. The remains of a castle and associated buildings occupy two small islands at the north-east end of the loch: Eilean Mór, meaning 'great isle'; and Eilean na Comhairle, meaning 'council isle'. Most of the late medieval buildings are reduced to the lower courses of their walls, but this shows the remains of one or two relatively well-preserved buildings on Eilean Mór. This was probably a service range for the main part of the castle. There are a number of features still visible within the rubble-built structure. The gable to the left contains an arched service hatch or window with a small aumbry or cupboard next to it. There are traces of a doorway in the right gable. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
