Scope and Content View of clay-mixing machine in engine house of Foreland Brick and Tile Works, Islay, Argyll and Bute The remains of a brick and tile works standsc.400m north-east of Foreland House overlooking Islay's Loch Indaal. Dating from c.1840, this industrial complex was established to manufacture drain-tiles for use by tenant farmers draining their fields. This shows the remains of a cast iron clay-mixing machine which stands in the middle of the engine house. Measuring 0.8m in diameter, the machine was originally horse-driven via an overhead shaft. The complex was L-shaped in layout with a drying shed, engine house and kiln. There are the remains of 19 upstanding masonry piers of the former drying shed, the roofless engine house, and parts of the walls of the kiln. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
