Scope and Content Drawing of Early Christian carved stone at chapel and burial-ground at Gleann na Gaoith', Islay, Argyll and Bute The remains of a chapel and burial-ground lie at Gleann na Gaoith', c.5km north-east of Portnahaven on the south-east coast of Islay's Rhinns peninsula. The chapel may possibly date from as early as the 9th or 10th century. To the south-east of the chapel are the remains of a rough platform which may mark the site of a grave. Two Early Christian carved stones lie in the burial-ground, while a third from the chapel is now in the Museum of Islay Life in Port Charlotte, Islay. As the drawing shows, this stone bears an incised cross with a circle drawn across the top arm of the cross and behind the other arms. This may represent a wreath hung from the cross, a popular symbol in Mediterranean art at that time. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
