New Bridge of Earn View of bridge from ENE

SC 427041

Description New Bridge of Earn View of bridge from ENE

Date 9/5/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 427041

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content New Bridge of Earn, Bridge of Earn, Perthshire This is an early 19th century turnpike road bridge, widened between the wars in concrete to take growing motor traffic, and now relieved of heavy traffic by the construction of the M9 motorway. This view shows the bridge from the south east. The original arch ring can be seen set back from the present face of the bridge. Care has obviously been taken to preserve the appearance of the structure. Widening of bridges using reinforced concrete was not uncommon in the inter-war years. This is a particularly sympathetic and thoughtful intervention. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
