Scope and Content 19th-century map of the Canongate showing the garden of Moray House, Canongate, Edinburgh Moray House was built for Mary, Dowager Countess of Home in 1618 and given to her daughter, Countess of Moray in 1643. It was visited by Charles I, and Cromwell lived here on two occasions. It is now a teachers' training college. Originally the house had extensive gardens 'of such elegance' and fruit orchards. A huge hawthorn tree, 'Queen Mary's Thorn', was said to have been planted by Queen Mary. No trace, however, exists of this tree and the garden is now the car park. In the 16th century the Scottish court at Holyrood attracted the nobility, many of whom built a townhouse as close to the Palace as possible. The Canongate, outside the confines of the Flodden Wall, was renowned for its large gardens and orchards. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
