Scope and Content View of the 17th-century Mercat Cross, High Street, Edinburgh The Mercat Cross, mentioned in a charter of 1365, stood on the south side of High Street, east of St Giles. It was rebuilt in 1617, demolished in 1756, and parts were built into the present Cross of 1885 which stands just south of its original position. The 17th-century Cross by John Tailefer and John Mylne had an octagonal base bearing eight medallions, and incorporated the shaft and capital of the earlier Cross. The door led to a platform from where Royal Proclamations were made. The Mercat Cross in the High Street was the focal point for trade, but also served as a place of execution, a centre for public entertainment and rejoicing, and from where Royal Proclamations were made.
