Scope and Content Detail of ceiling from the Thistle Chapel, St Giles' Cathedral, High Street, Edinburgh The Thistle Chapel, added to St Giles in 1911 by Robert Lorimer, is the private chapel for the Order of the Thistle. It is the most ornate building of its type built in Scotland since the Middle Ages. The vaulted ceiling of the chapel has an elaborate pattern of ribs and carved bosses, picked out in gold and colour, by the stonemason, Joseph Hayes. The lower boss depicts St Andrew, patron saint of Scotland, and the upper one, the lion rampant. The Order of the Thistle, Scotland's oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry, was founded in the 15th century by James III. The Order has 16 Knights and three Royal Members. Knighthoods are given to distinguished Scots for services to the nation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
