Scope and Content Interior of St Giles' Cathedral, High Street, Edinburgh The High Kirk of St Giles has been a central feature of the Old Town for nearly 800 years. Its central tower with open crown forms a distinctive feature of the sky-line of the city. The south aisle of the nave has pointed tunnel-vaulting with transverse and diagonal ribs applied as ceiling decoration, a typical Scottish medieval feature. John Knox, minister of St Giles from 1559, helped to establish Presbyterianism in Scotland. Church organisation was based on the Geneva pattern with elders, Kirk Sessions and a General Assembly, a parallel to the Three Estates of Parliament. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
