Scope and Content 19th-century plan of the interior of St Giles' Cathedral, High Street, Edinburgh The High Kirk of St Giles has been the central feature of the Old Town for nearly 800 years. Its central tower with its open crown forms a distinctive feature of the sky-line of the city. In the early 19th century, St Giles was divided into four separate churches: the High, the Old, the Tolbooth and the New Church or 'Haddo's Hole'. Parts were used for non-church activities, including a police station in the nave. In 1867 Lord Provost William Chambers proposed the restoration of the interior of St Giles as a single church. Work began in 1871 to remove the internal partitions, replace the west doorway (1884) and install stained glass windows by Ballantine. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
