Scope and Content Interior of St Giles' Cathedral, High Street, Edinburgh The High Kirk of St Giles has been the central feature of the Old Town for nearly 800 years. Its central tower with its open crown forms a distinctive feature of the sky-line of the city. The roof has pointed tunnel-vaulting, characteristic of Scottish late medieval architecture. The pulpit, carved in Caen stone, is by John Rhind. Banners and battle honours of famous Scottish regiments hang from the pillars. When Catholic Mary Stewart became Queen in 1561, St Giles became the focus of John Knox's great struggle to establish Presbyterianism, a cause taken up by later ministers in the 'Tumult of St Giles' when they rallied against her son James VI.
