Scope and Content Statue of Charles II at St Giles' Cathedral, Parliament Square, Edinburgh The High Kirk of St Giles has been the central feature of the Old Town for nearly 800 years. Its central tower with open crown forms a distinctive feature of the sky-line of the city. The life-size equestrian statue of Charles II, the oldest of this type in Britain, was given by James Smith, Surveyor of the King's Works in 1685. It represents the King 'like one of the Caesars, almost naked and so without spurs and without stirrups'. Charles II was the last king crowned in Scotland in 1651. After an unsuccessful attempt in 1669 to unite the Scottish and English Parliaments, he did more than anyone to create the conditions and interests favourable to the eventual Union in 1707.
