Scope and Content Detail of a painted ceiling in John Knox House, High Street, Edinburgh John Knox House was first mentioned in 1525 as the property of Walter Reidpath. It was inherited by James Mossman, goldsmith to Mary Queen of Scots, in 1556. The link between the house and the actual John Knox is tenuous . The house has many features characteristic of 16th-century Old Town interiors including low-ceilinged rooms with oak panelling. Restoration has revealed a painted timber ceiling, and traces of a medieval plaster finish. John Knox, the Scottish Reformer, was minister of St Giles from 1559-72 when James Mossman, 'a zealous Catholic' and 'Queen's man', lived in the house. It is unlikely he would have allowed Knox, an equally zealous Protestant, to cross his threshold. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
