Scope and Content Detail of plaster ceiling in Bailie John McMorran's House, Riddle's Court, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh Bailie McMorran's house was built in the late 16th century for Bailie John McMorran, a wealthy merchant and city magistrate. It is an example of 'the gentlemen's mansions' 'obscurely found' in the closes off the Lawnmarket. The elaborate plaster ceiling in the south-east room of the house is an interesting variation on the usual theme of fruit, flowers and arabesques. It shows the thistle of Scotland, the rose of England, a crown, the cipher of Charles II and the date 1648. In 1598 Bailie McMorran's house was the scene of a lavish banquet given by the Town Council of Edinburgh for King James VI and his wife, Queen Anne of Denmark, in honour of a visit to Edinburgh by her brother, the Duke of Holstein.
