Scope and Content 19th-century plan of ground floor of Bailie John McMorran's House, Riddle's Court, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh Bailie McMorran's house was built in the late 16th century for Bailie John McMorran, a wealthy merchant and city magistrate. It is an example of 'the gentlemen's mansions' 'obscurely found' in the closes off the Lawnmarket. The house, three-storeyed with a turret staircase, was built round an inner courtyard that could be closed at night. It was entered through a pend from an outer courtyard, Riddle's Court. Bailie John McMorran, a wealthy city magistrate, was shot dead by a schoolboy while trying to restore order at the Royal High School riot in 1595. The boys had been denied a week's holiday.
